In the old days, the happy days, when Wyoming was a Territory with a future instead of a State with a past, and the unfenced cattle grazed upon her ranges by prosperous thousands, young Lin McLean awaked early one morning in cow camp, and lay staring out of his blankets upon the world. He would be twenty-two this week. He was the youngest cow-puncher in camp. But because he could break wild horses, he was earning more dollars a month than any man there, except one. The cook was a more indispensable person. None save the cook was up, so far, this morning. Lin's brother punchers slept about him on the ground, some motionless, some shifting their prone heads to burrow deeper from the increasing day. The busy work of spring was over, that of the fall, or beef round-up, not yet come. It was mid-July, a lull for these hard-riding bachelors of the saddle, and many unspent dollars stood to Mr. McLean's credit on the ranch books.

I specifically chose this book because it was written by one of the oldest Western writers we have. I loved his thoughts, especially the comparison of liars to whiskey drinkers, really of compulsive liars to alcoholics. Good storyline and I will be reading more of his stories!
The only drawback was getting used to his changing characters and only referring to them as "he said or she said" with no clear evidence of which characters are speaking until you deduce which character it is by what they are saying.

Lin McLean Owen Wister 9781515252689 Books Reviews

This such an awesome book. Biscuit Shooter has been in a friendly insult in our family vocabulary for the last 20 years. I love this book much more than Owen Wister's more famous classic The Virginan.
I love a good western story. This why I gave it four stars. Many would (probably) not agree....
I was sent the wrong book which I returned.
The seller quickly exchanged the book for the correct book.
The book I received was in excellent condition and I am
enjoying reading it.
The seller was very cooperative, courteous and prompt. I would
do business with him in the future.
I found this a better book than even the Virginian. This book held my attention and flowed very well. That's not to say I didn't find the Virginian a great book. Lin McLean was up there with it!
A lovely, if old-fashioned book. It gives a true picture of the West as it really was - without all the Hollywood tinsel.
As funny as the Virginian. I liked this book and enjoyed meeting all the memorable characters. Good light reading.
Owen Wister was a great writer and this story is a good example. BUT the tiny print in this book is ridiculous. Even a person with normal vision will need a magnifying glass to read it. I will donate it to the local library and hope somebody can use it. Save your money and pass on this one.
